Its fun to pick books and have everyone read them. I like how we get good recommendations from friends.

To read and learn about books you never would have thought were interesting is great!
Student - Kathleen

It feels good being in a book club. I get to meet people who have also read the book and share my knowledge with them.
Student - Nickolas

I like being able to share ideas and not feel like people don’t want to hear them. Being in a book club is fun!
Student - Hannah

The Canadian Children’s Book Club Program unequivocally supports our aspirations for our students. By providing the infrastructure to support student-led book clubs in the school setting, the program creates excitement about reading. The students get to read great books. They get to meet amazing Canadian authors. It is a thrilling opportunity for them.
Teacher Librarian - Lisa Taylor

The Canadian Children’s Book Club school visits were the highlight of my visit to Toronto. I feel this program is contributing to literacy in the best possible way: by exciting young people about fiction. The focused discussions give students the tools to talk about books, extract the nectar and experience the pleasure of language.

The fostering of a love of reading is central to Fern School Library’s program. Tessa Griffin, the Canadian Children’s Book Club Program, and the wonderful books she works so hard to put into children’s hands have helped to transform them into readers.
Teacher Librarian - Ellen Douglas

The Canadian Children’s Book Club Program is a wonderful forum which encourages children to embrace reading and to think beyond the pages about what they have read. It is also a great gift for authors. This event was a great opportunity for Paul Glennon [author] to interact with young readers, to receive feedback about this book and to see that it resonated with the students.
Publicist - Nicola Makoway

World Literacy of Canada views the Canadian Children’s Book Club Program as an extremely progressive initiative towards encouraging children to read discuss and develope a greater love for reading.
Executive Director World Literacy of Canada - Mamta Mishra

TYPE Books is extremely proud to be a part of the Canadian Children’s Book Club Program. We particularly love the way the program instills a passion for reading and talking about books outside of the school environment and the way it brings young people in contact with authors thus allowing them to fully participate in the reading process.
Co-Owner, TYPE Books - Joanne Saul

Book Club is really fun. We get to read awesome books and share our thoughts about it with our friends. We also get to go on fun field trips to meet the authors of the books we read. Last time, I read “the Thrilling Life of Pauline de Lammermoor” It was great! And the best part was I bought the rest of the series, got to meet the author, Edeet Ravel, and got all my books signed.
Student - Amanda

It’s fun…cool! It gets me reading more books.
Student - Jessica

I’m a part of the book club at (my school) and it ROCKS! Just a few weeks ago we went to Chapters to see a famous author present their book. This book club lets us talk to our friends about all kinds of books. It has inspired me to read more books. Book Club means a lot to everyone.
Student - Selena

I read a lot more books now and I get to share my opinions. I would really like to keep this going.
Student - Emma

I love reading so much that I will cry if you squish the book club at my school. Books make you smart and happy. To me the book club is like a tree with reading bumble bees! At (my school) the book club is a huge part of this school!
Student - Sarah

Book Club has inspired me to read more books. When I read sometimes I don’t understand the book because I read too fast. Book club has made me learn new things and be able to read better and understand too. I think this club is a great opportunity to learn how to read and at the same time have fun.
Student - Sally

I am a book fanatic! I LOVE BOOKS! That is why I love book club. It is almost like a part of me. Book club is the door of opportunity opening for everyone who loves to read. Book club can make a difference!
Student - Jessica

It’s so much fun being in the book club and going on really neat trips to learn about authors and how they got started. If book club gets cancelled I’ll be heart broken. It almost means the world to me!!!
Student - Lana

Meeting young readers face to face and spending time with them through the Canadian Children’s Book Club Program is an absolute delight. Experiencing the enthusiasm of young readers first-hand both energizes and uplifts me. It’s as close as this writer has come to feeling like a star!

The Canadian Children's Book Club Program is one of the coolest ideas I've heard about in a long time. Having kids come together to read and discuss the books they've been reading (and their authors) is amazing...it's a great way to meet other people who like books, make some new friends, and, best of all, have fun!! I only wish I could be a Book Club member!!
Author - David Poulsen

I did a reading of The Royal Woods at the Chapter’s Runnymede Book Store. It was by far the most fun I have had so far in the year 2008. In fact, it’s probably more fun than I had during all of 2007. What impressed me most of all was how interesting and intelligent the questions were. Some even suggested interesting possibilities for my next book.
Author - Matt Duggan

“Participating in the Canadian Children’s Book Club Program was a wonderful, enriching experience from every point of view. For the kids it was an exciting opportunity to meet the writer and a real incentive to read the books in advance… And it was wonderful for me, as I had a chance to meet my young readers, talk to them, hear their thoughts and enjoy their enthusiasm. Their comments inspired me and gave me some ideas for the future.

Reading is often a solo activity but the book club makes it social.  My daughter is enthusiastic about reading the club selections. By far the biggest benefit for my daughter has been meeting authors.   She would never otherwise have much of an opportunity to meet and hear the author of a book she had just read.  She has attended three author visits and in all three cases has been inspired to read more of their books. She is looking forward to the book club resuming in the fall.  Thank you for bringing the Canadian Children's Book Club Program to our school.

The children in my school have shown remarkable enthusiasm for the Book Club Program. They are taking initiative, while demonstrating leadership skills and a genuine desire to get together to talk about the books they are reading. This program supports our efforts in the classroom towards literacy. It creates a perfect venue to practice what is implicit in the curriculum. Reading is no longer a passive activity. The children at my school are now discussing authors as they would hockey players!
Teacher - Claudette Brown

The book clubs that we have done have been a huge success. In fact, the conversation and the ideas expressed by the students at the meetings have blown us away. The students are making exactly the connections and inferences that we have been teaching them to make all year. We enjoyed the visit with Matt Duggan and we are definitely looking forward to Jean Little. I hope that this program is available to us next year. I would recommend it to other schools. I know a lot of schools that would be interested. Once again, thanks!
